On November 20th, the Intercontinental Championship will be on the line as Smackdown star Dolph Ziggler will defend the gold against the most underused and directionless talent in RAW star, Sami Zayn.
Survivor Series has finally returned to the Smackdown vs RAW format and Dolph Ziggler set the challenge for any RAW talent to face him for the Intercontinental championship and that talent was decided to be, Sami Zayn. Zayn defeated Rusev this past week on RAW to earn the right to face Ziggler for the Intercontinental title and I have to say I am very surprised at Zayn’s victory. After months of pointless matches and a big loss to Chris Jericho that killed his momentum, Zayn is on the verge of winning his first championship on WWE’s main roster and there is only one thing to make of it, he deserves this opportunity.
Sami Zayn has had a storied career and has always been portrayed as the underdog no matter what company he is in hence his nickname, “The Underdog From The Underground”. However, I believe it is time to drop the underdog shtick and finally give Sami his spotlight that he has rightfully earned. During his entire career, Sami Zayn has been taking a backseat to almost everybody including his long time rival and best friend and the current WWE Universal Champion, Kevin Owens. Owens and Zayn have had phenomenal matches together this year including my personal match of the year, their battle at this years Battleground. In that match Zayn showed to not only his fans but to the entire WWE locker room that he can hang with the very best and can put on five-star matches. Sami has undeniable talent and it is time for him to stop taking a backseat to everybody and finally have his moment to shine by defeating Dolph Ziggler and having his first taste of WWE main roster gold.
Sami Zayn’s only taste of gold in the WWE was his very short reign as NXT Champion. Sami’s reign as champion is the shortest in history at 62 days when he lost it to the man he has been taking a backseat to his whole career, Kevin Owens. Zayn wasn’t even pinned or submitted when he lost the title but he was brutally beat down by Zayn and couldn’t “medically compete” any further. It was a terrible way to have one of your most beloved stars to lose the championship but I do understand why they did it and that is to build Kevin Owens up thus proving my point that Zayn isn’t a priority for WWE but I do feel that is about to change at Survivor Series.
But there is one huge reason why Sami Zayn deserves the Intercontinental Championship. The fans. Not only does Sami Zayn deserve the championship but the fans deserve a championship run from one of their most beloved stars, Sami Zayn. If you don’t believe me when I say the fans LOVE Sami Zayn, listen to the reaction he gets every time he makes his entrance. Not only do the fans sing along with his theme song but they still chant the classic “OLE OLE” chants and not many stars today can claim that the fans sing their theme and form iconic chants for them. Except for Nakamura. That dude is just awesome. Sami Zayn has a strong fan base that would be absolutely ecstatic if he won a major championship (myself included) and the time is getting closer for Sami Zayn to finally break the barrier and win the gold.
Sami Zayn vs Dolph Ziggler is sure to steal the show and if Sami Zayn wins the title (which he should hence the point of this writing) then expect a huge reaction and a very emotional celebration for Sami Zayn. Zayn has worked his entire life to get to the WWE and to finally win a prestigious championship like the Intercontinental Championship will make it all worth it for the former El Generico.
Sami is closer than ever and when it is all said and done after Survivor Series, we should and will be calling Sami Zayn the new WWE Intercontinental Champion.
